"You know what, Stuart, I LIKE YOU. You're not like the other
people, here, in the trailer park."

A better Dead Milkmen opening, I think.

Dabysan

Not bad, but I prefer the simplicity and directness of the Punk Rock girl opener. My favorite Dead Milkmen song is Deans Dream.

FS

Talking Heads' Psycho Killer is a strong opening:

"I can't seem to face up to the facts /
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax"

FS

Dean's Dream is an awesome song, but the opening is a little flat.  The good lyrics are later.

Jason

[this is good] Pistols, Iggy, MC5, Op Ivy, Joe Strummer...you're so predictable.

I love shit like this.  Here a few of my favorites even though I haven't ever thought about this topic (what am I doing with my time):

"Pop open a bottle of bubbly...yeah.  Here's to another goddamn new year."
Ice of Boston, The Dismemberment Plan

"I'm your only friend, I'm not your only friend, but I'm a little glowing friend, but really I'm not actually your friend, but I am."
Birdhouse In Your Soul, TMBG

"Pigs they tend to wiggle when they walk..."
Stereo, Pavement

"Got you where I want you motherfucker, I got five up on your dime."
Honky's ladder, Afghan Whigs

FS

I know you're not a Springsteen fan, but the opening of The River is classic depressive-mode Bruce:

"I come from down in the valley, where mister when you're young /
They bring you up to do like your daddy done"

Dabysan

It's not my fault that all the best music got made between 1969 and 1979. I'm just the messenger. The TMBG opener gets an honorable mention. All Pavement songs are banned.

Dabysan

You made me remember another favorite:

"It was Christmas Eve babe, in the drunk tank, and almost certainly won't see another one" - Pogues/Fairytale of New York

Jason

Now that's a good on.e

Bookmole

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one

Bookmole

Meant to add that the lyrics of this song are probably engraved on my brain in gold leaf, somewhere.

Dabysan

wow. who knew. I though I knew that song like the back of my hand. Oh well. still awesome.

Jodi

Meh. I liked this list better the first time, when it was correct.

Dabysan

Consider it an homage to you. Only, you know, right.

Jodi

I appreciate the homage, but we all know they rarely improve on the original.

Cap'n Crook

I was getting worried around #8 and not seeing Joe Strummer's name.

FS: Everybody knows the burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground!

FS

Why the hell do you think they call it a burrow owl, anyway?

FS

I think it's interesting you went with Holidays in the Sun rather than Anarchy in the U.K.  "I am an Antichrist / I am an anarchist" is a pretty strong opening.

Dabysan

See, I thought of that, but I wonder if the real opening of that song isn't "right...now, ha ha ha ha"

Anyway, I'll stick by Holiday in the Sun. I like that turn of phrase.

hotrod

I knew.  But that shouldn't surprise you.  I know more about all of your favorite things than you do.

FS

How about Sympathy for the Devil?

"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year; stole many a man's soul and faith"

Emma Peel

I am an American aquarium drinker/I assassin down the avenue

hotrod

I like where you're going with this.  I submit:

The ashtray says/you were up all night.

Emma Peel

go back to those gold soundz/and keep my advent to your self
because it's nothing i don't like/is it a crisis or a boring change?

Emma Peel

It's my father's voice dreaming of
Sailors sailing off in the morning
for the air-conditioned rooms
at the top of the stairs

His jaw's been broken
his bandage is wrapped too tight
his fangs have been pulled
and i really want to see you tonight
