Interesting. I've never seen The Shins. Because, like you, I figured that they wouldn't offer up much that I wasn't getting from the CDs. Now, I feel a little like I've been missing out on something.

The New Pornographers should take lessons, but I suspect they're too goddamn smug and self-satisfied to learn anything.

I had the same concerns, believe me. They were awesome. Catch them the next time they swing by your nearest soulless super-pavilion.

Jodi

Everytime they've played here it's always been at First Ave which is far from soulless. It's the best place to see a show. I heart First Ave.

Dabysan

Well then, you definitely have to get yer ass over there next time. They're goot.

I'll just have to believe this is true b/c I can barely get through their records much less shell out the cizash to hear them live.  I'll admit that Natalie Portman completely ruined them for me.

Dabysan

You really shouldn't let Natalie Portman keep you from listening to one of the best bands out there today. It's possible that Zach Braff just has good taste.

I just saw V for Vendetta for the first time over the weekend. I'm with Akai- on this one.

Dabysan

I'm sorry, but unless you're 12, that is an utterly vapid reason to dislike a band.

Garden State was a MOVIE and not a very good one. It just happened to have a good soundtrack. It is not entirely clear whether Natalie Portman even likes the Shins. She's an actress, who was playing a character. If you want to not like a band that is a) currently active and b) making some of the best new records of our time, consistently, you should think up a better reason.

Cap'n Crook

Oh no no. I'm on board with The Shins. I can look past the honest mistake by Zach Braff. But Natalie Portman is another in a long list of actresses/female vocalists who should only be models.

akaijen

I don't even know if she should be that.  I saw her recently in a Chanel ad.  She just had the dingiest look in her eye.  I see the photo and I either hear her whining "Annie!" or her being especially annoying in Garden State.

OK so maybe Garden State didn't exactly ruin the band for me.  I was already iffy.  I want to like them, but I just feel put to sleep by their music.  But the problem with the movie is that the Shins automatically make me think of annoying Natalie Portman in that movie, and then I just get a bad taste in mouth, scrunge my nose, you know.  It's like guilt by association.  The Shins didn't have to sell out to THAT movie.  Much better to hock your soul to Tom Cruise if you're gonna do it at all.
