QotD: iPad

Apple unveiled their new tablet computer, the iPad, yesterday. Will you be dishing out $499 for this much-anticipated gadget?

Listen QOTD, I don't like you, and you don't like me, but for the purposes of this challenge, we're going to have to learn to live with each other for the next 11 months, so let's not make it awkward. Deal? Deal.

As to the Q, while I do own a large number of apple products (ipod, iphone, macbook pro) I don't necessarily consider myself an Apple fanboy. Those products all serve specific needs in my life, and someone is going to have to explain to me how the atrociously-named iPad is going to help me. I can't imagine that many situations in which I a) won't need my actual computer but b) will want a large, computer-like appliance that acts like a larger version of my phone. Please enlighten me if I'm missing something.

So short answer is "no" but I guess I'm open to convincing.

The iPad is literally one of the most retarded and useless things I have ever seen.  It's clear at this point that Steve Jobs if having a joke at the expense - literally - of the retarded and useless people who mindlessly shell out for Apple products.

It's actually a no for me too. Like you, Daby, I have a hard time seeing the gap the iPad fits into. Fuck, I never leave my house anyway. I barely need a phone.

Someone joked that it'd be better if they made it smaller, and let you make calls from it.

Really, without multi-tasking it is just a big iPod Touch. I'll stick with my iPhone and MacBook, thank you.

That would be really useful. Maybe they could add a camera too. And make it cheaper along with being smaller.

I think we all have a future in product development. Maybe Apple will give us all jobs.

While I don't think the iPad is there yet, Apple has a history of creating products we didn't even know we wanted. How many people scoffed at the iPod when it was first released -- all it's flaws and ridiculous price and all?

Like I said, if it's basically just an expensive kindle that you can watch movies on, I'm not to motivated, but we'll see. I also really wonder about the battery life, which I bet is gonna be rotten.
